Did you know that you carry a lethal weapon with you all the time? I’m not talking about “packing heat.” I’m talking about the potentially deadly weapon that is your tongue.

“The tongue has the power of life and death.” (Proverbs 18:21) Whether or not you believe The Bible, you probably agree with those words.

Who doesn’t remember a cruel name they were called in childhood? (“Tubs” was the one I hated most) Or repeatedly play back condemning words fired by a trusted friend or family member?

Yes, words can encourage and affirm.

Have you ever waited for a train to arrive? Or sat in a train station, treasuring last moments with a loved one as they prepared to depart on an incoming train?

You spend a lot of time wondering. And listening for the train’s arrival. The wait can seem endless…and then, suddenly, an announcement is made, and the hurry-scurry begins as people gather their belongings and prepare to board the train during its short stop at the station.

I was finishing a letter-writing workshop with a group of high school parents, and my college-aged daughter was sitting in the back of the room at her alma mater. On the way to the event, she’d given me these instructions: “Don’t call me out, Mom. I just want to play your music for you.”

How much of your life do you spend thinking about the future or replaying events from the past? If you’re like most of us, the answer is “ a lot.”

In fact, it’s easy to spend so much time looking ahead or behind that you miss the gift that is “TODAY.”

Our lives are like strands of pearls…all different lengths…but made up of lots of individual pearls called “today.” I’ve got 21,496 pearls in my necklace today. How about you? (Here’s a calculator to help you figure it out.)

Be honest. Are there days when you feel like giving your child or teenager back?

Please…do it! It’s the best parenting decision I ever made.

Today is a big day. My only child is graduating from college. Major life events tend to make me reflective, and this milestone especially so.

Yes, I've made plenty of mistakes.

But the wisest thing I ever did was to give my daughter back…to God.

To my dear daughter...and countless other outstanding young people...as college graduation draws near.

As the day quickly approaches when you will don the cap and gown, I’ve been thinking back to my own college graduation. And remembering things I wish I had known as I entered the “real world.”  Every parent wants to spare their child the pain of learning life lessons the hard way!

Hurry, hurry, hurry. Busy, busy, busy. We are important people, with packed schedules and long to-do lists.

And what often accompanies the fast pace of life is a very short fuse. Slow or incompetent service frustrates us. We become easily annoyed at having to wait too long for our “tall, half-caff, soy latte at 120 degrees.” And we’re not shy about telling the person delivering the service how we feel about the sub-par treatment.

It’s that time again. Allergy season in Atlanta. Everything is covered in pollen. Cars look as though they have been dipped in yellow powdered sugar. And lots of people have very red eyes.

I wish I could say that’s the reason for my condition. At least it’s a good excuse.

Last summer, I was invited to join an amazing group of women ministry leaders in Dallas for a summit sponsored by Faithlife. Women like Kay Arthur. Liz Curtis Higgs. June Hunt. Carol Kent. Glenna Salsbury. Mary Welchel. And me. (I still can't believe I was invited!)

One of the great outcomes of the summit was the assembly of a wonderful e-book, full of insights from this incredible group of women. It's called "What I Wish I'd Known."

Here's the link to the free book:

At times recently,  I’ve felt as though I was sitting in the bleachers, watching my life unfold. And I’ve been somewhat slack-jawed at the ways God is answering prayers. The truth that He can do “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20) continues to be demonstrated in my life. I hope that God’s faithfulness in my life will encourage you to step out in faith and to pray big prayers for your own life.
