Whether you’re newlyweds or celebrating 50 years together, it’s possible to breathe some fresh life into your marriage relationship.
Sounds like a great idea, right? But how?
Begin the monthly celebration of “Companion Appreciation Day.”
This bit of relational genius was created by my young friends, William and Monica Warren. The Warrens have only been married for 2.5 years and they established this beautiful monthly tradition before their own wedding in 2013. William is now 30, Monica is 29.
The Warrens wanted to be intentional about nurturing their marriage and keeping it as their top earthly priority. They knew it wouldn’t happen without focus and commitment.
Yes, they are young. But, oh, are they wise.
William is a creative genius with his art (check out his thriving business, The Sketch Effect, www.thesketcheffect.com and you’ll see what I mean.)
What’s beautiful is to see this level of creativity and focus applied to building an exceptional marriage.
And it all comes down to being intentional. This is a monthly tradition that every married couple could adopt, no matter your age.
Here’s what comprises “Companion Appreciation Day:”
- On the same day of each month (for them, it’s the 24th), they have dinner at their favorite restaurant. This requires intentionally blocking that date off on the calendar each month and then keeping the commitment.
- Three topics are covered at dinner each month. As the topics are discussed, the answers are recorded in a journal.
- Topic One: Each lists 5 special things that the other person did for them during the prior month. It might be a thoughtful action. It might be something really big. It might be something small. It might be a behavior or response that reflected a special character quality. But each entry is specific and is focused on appreciation and affirmation.
- Topic Two: Each lists 5 favorite memories of times together over the past month. It could be a hike. A dinner with family or friends. A concert. Again, it might be something big. It might be something small. But each entry is a cherished memory of time together.
- Topic Three: What is one thing each person observed the other do for someone else during the previous month? What was the action and why was it meaningful?
After these topics are recorded in the journal, the Warrens snap a picture of that month’s entries. Preserving these special reflections is very important to them. A journal could be lost or destroyed, but having a digital copy decreases the likelihood that these beautiful memories will be forgotten.
Won’t you give it a try? 2016 is about to begin. Why not commit to celebrating 12 Companion Appreciation Days with your partner in 2016?
Take the challenge.
Focus on the positives.
Record the memories.
And see what happens in your own marriage.
Be intentional.
I believe that your marriage will thrive.
Isn't it worth a try?
